June 2026: storytelling for a better world

Each month, we break down our topic into four weekly modules. Catch up on previous editions here.โ€‹

This week's module: DREAM

  • ๐ŸŽฏ DREAM | go forth and find slices of utopia
  • LEARN | what IS good storytelling? what are the stories we need?
  • ACT | actions you can take asap to feed your imagination to build a better future
  • REFLECT | Art, poetry, and commitments

Estimated reading time: 3 minutes

Here's what we'll learn today Reader

It's STORYTELLING MONTH!

We are all living in someone else's dream right now. That dream is fossil-fuel choked. Cars line the streets of this dream in menacing, ever-growing clumps. The dream, in fact, has contorted so grossly it doesn't belong to a person anymore.

IT'S TIME FOR A NEW FREAKING DREAM! It's time for a new story!

Enough of settling for fighting climate change or banning fossil fuels or alllll the other ways we're simply battling the old story.

We need to start over.

This month through Soapbox's Changeletter, let's put aside all the "that could never happen here!!" or "that's unrealistic!" and instead, let's imagine that we can shape the world through the narratives we create. Because it's true.

Today's Changeletter is, in my opinion, the simplest and most joyful bite-sized actions ever.

All I want is for you Reader is to bring me three slices of utopia.

Then, next week, we'll LEARN about what makes a "good" story and the power of imagination, the following week we'll ACT in bringing stories to our own lives, and finally, we'll REFLECT with some art.

So excited to kick off our June topic of storytelling with you, and please reply to this email bringing me my slices!! Instructions below!

Your bite-sized action plan Reader

Historically, I've given you prompts at the beginning of each month where you can dream up the future with friends and family.

Today's is going to be a little different and a lot simpler:

All I want you to do is to find three slices of utopia, and email me back with them, or (preferred) post them on social media and tag @soapboxproject so we can reshare.

You might be wondering. What is a slice of utopia?!

These are the glimmers of a better future. You can pull them from real-world examples, fiction you've read/watched, or your own imagination.

Here are some slices of utopia that I would want you to know about:

  1. 24-hour libraries with late-night cafes and creative coworking sessions (my imagination, but I'm guessing this exists somewhere)
  2. free healthcare (already exists in other places)
  3. โ€‹repurposed parking garagesโ€‹
  4. โ€‹pulling clean drinking water from airโ€‹
  5. โ€‹a world where conservatives also care deeply about the planetโ€‹
  6. โ€‹cooling systems for cities that would also be a great place to raveโ€‹
  7. reading a newspaper that gives me hope, outside in the not-scorching sun, without being distracted by my screens
  8. The Barbie movie. Like, kind of everything about it

So, this week, go out into the world and find 3 slices of utopia. Send them to me if you can. Tag @soapboxproject on IG if you see good news. Talk about your utopia with your loved ones, because utopia is deeply personal.

A better world is possible, but only if we can pin down what it could be.

โ€‹P.S. find me featured in this article about radical imagination and utopian fiction!โ€‹

Here's to the future we deserve,

Nivi <3
