May 2026: labor, climate, and human rights
Each month, we break down our topic into four weekly modules. Catch up on previous editions here.β
This week's module: DREAM (notice a difference?)
- π―DREAM | Dream about a liberated future for workers in the context of climate resilience
- LEARN | What are some key labor and human rights issues wrapped up in the climate crisis?
- ACT | Actions for corporate accountability and grassroots organizing
- REFLECT | Art, poetry, and commitments
Estimated reading time: 3 minutes
Here's what we'll learn today Reader
Did you notice a lil change? I'm playing around with renaming our first module of the month from CONNECT to DREAM since that's what we've been shifting towards. The content is the same--questions that I hope you'll take outside your inbox and into the world--but I think I'm a bit clearer on the objectives.
If we can't imagine a new world, we can't have it. (This is why the bad guys have been winning so much. They got their imaginations locked in.)
In May, we'll be discussing the intersections of climate and labor justice. I, personally, don't care about reducing carbon emissions for the sake of reducing carbon emissions.
I care about each of us having a future we belong in. No more peeing in bottles at your warehouse job that pays you less than minimum wage, and YES more universal basic income, access to healthcare, safe working conditions. YES to going above the bare minimum. What if every workplace had free candy dispensers and plant-based treats and... I don't know, two less days of work a week?
Anything is possible! But only if we can imagine it.
SPEAKING OF WHICH!! Spirit Airlines, a budget airline in the US, went bankrupt 4 days ago. A content creator named Hunter Peterson has started a movement to buy it and make it people-owned. I pledged for my share (no money required at this stage). Wanna co-own an airline with me? Do it for the plot. (P.S. my thoughts on aviation being fossil fuel intensive are at the bottom of this email) @spiritair2.0 on Instagram is worth a follow too.
βLet's Buy Spirit Air!β

Your bite-sized action plan Reader
β
DREAM with these conversation prompts.
These are meant to be conversation starters, imagination prompts, and activities you can take OUTSIDE your inbox, ideally with another human. They are designed to be in order, but you can do whatever feels right!
- What are your basic needs, and how much do they amount to? One of the challenges of our current society (and the human brain) is how we're always wanting more, more, more. Talk about your basic needs and how much it actually costs you to live. With all the extra, what are you currently doing? What can you do differently? If you're in a deficit, what's the amount that's missing?
β
- Examine your needs: food, water, clothing, and shelter. Pick two and talk about where they come from. Who makes them possible? Who were the humans involved in the banana you're eating? Without looking, would you know where your shirt was made? What would be different if you had a clear picture of where your things came from?
β
- What do your social circles look like in terms of class? What occupations are over and under-represented?β
β
- What does a liberated future look like for you? What would it look like if you didn't need to work? How would you spend your time?
Those are the questions to get you started this week!
Love,
Nivi
*My aviation thoughts re Lets Buy Spirit Air from earlier in this email
Aviation is fossil fuel intensive, and one of our biggest *personal* impacts is flying. That's why I try to fly less and share this with others too. So why am I interested in buying an airline?!
First of all, the plot. I think the positive impacts from a people-owned airline FAR outweigh the emissions, because the emissions already exist. People-owned airline does not.
Second of all, because everything is connected. A lot of the "it's impossible to electrify!" is not because of the lack of technology; it's because it's not a priority for executives. I'm keeping up too much with electrification in the aviation space, but I do know that being able to have a voice in the future of aviation is better than not having a voice.
Most of all, I love seeing a creative movement, and this bid to buy Spirit Air is truly one of the best things I've seen, so I'm participating.
