July 2026: storytelling for a better world

Each month, we break down our topic into four weekly modules. Catch up on previous editions here.

This week's module: DREAM

  • 🎯 DREAM | imagine a world without X where you decide what the variable is
  • LEARN | learn about actual, systemic solutions for waste around the world
  • ACT | actions you can take asap for a waste-free future
  • REFLECT | Art, poetry, and commitments

Estimated reading time: 3 minutes

Here's what we'll learn today Reader

Happy plastic-free July! In honor of this month, our July topic at Soapbox is waste and how it intersects with the climate crisis.

It's also PNW Climate Week, and in addition to our weekly programming in Seattle, we have a special event coming up with Oatly on Thursday, July 16. If you're in town, come through!

This week, as we DREAM about a waste-free world, I have only one teeny tiny assignment for you before we get into our learning content next week.

(Next week's going to be a fun + uplifting one about some very exciting waste SOLUTIONS that have been implemented all around the world, because I think we know enough about the problems for now.)

Ready for your assignment?

It's imaginative, it's short, it's collaborative ⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️

Your bite-sized action plan Reader

All I want you to do between this week and next week is imagine a world without X and go live it for the next seven days.

For example:

  • A world without plastic
  • A world without apathy
  • A world without rush

If you're wondering why one of them is explicitly waste-related whereas the other two are ✨vibes,✨ something we asked ourselves last night at Soapbox Seattle is... when does something become waste to you?

And for our moderator, it was a function of time and tolerance. When her tolerance for an object in her house goes down, and the time the object is in her house keeps going up, the likelihood of it becoming waste increases.

"Waste" is highly subjective, especially today when people are throwing away new with tags clothes at the same rate as banana peels. So, pick a prompt above, or invent your own world without X. Take out one single variable from the "status quo" and see how it affects your relationship with your own life, including the way you perceive waste.

Your homework this week is to actually live it out to the best of your abilities. Tell your family; tell your friends; embark on your quest, and I'll see you next week!

Love,

Nivi <3

P.S. Shoutout to our Soapbox 2022 cohort for these prompts!
