May 2026: labor, climate, and human rights
Each month, we break down our topic into four weekly modules. Catch up on previous editions here.
This week's module: ACT
- ✅ DREAM | Dream about a liberated future for workers in the context of climate resilience
- ✅ LEARN | What are some key labor and human rights issues wrapped up in the climate crisis?
- 🎯 ACT | Actions for corporate accountability and grassroots organizing
- REFLECT | Art, poetry, and commitments
Estimated reading time: 3 minutes
Here's what we'll learn today Reader
I love your feedback and your input. I really, really do. But sometimes it's easy to forget on the internet that I am a person (and quite a small one) and no one is paying me to do this stuff so PLEASE BE NICE TO ME OR I WILL CRY. Criticism is fair! But please at least read what I'm writing first and be reasonable about it <333
Since it apparently bears repeating, individual actions are a foundational part of climate action, but they are not THE solution, and Soapbox's role is to connect each of us with our *individual power* for *systemic change.*
Every day, I struggle with the question of if I should still work on Soapbox. Every mean reply is a kneecapping of my determination that this matters.
Speaking of kneecapping beliefs... we have so much gossip today! SHEIN (yuck) bought Everlane! There is so much cool AI resistance happening that is directly relevant to our May topic of climate, labor, and human rights! Data center moratoriums are taking effect around the world!
I went to my first-ever in person city council meeting earlier today to weigh in on a data center moratorium in Seattle, and it was INCREDIBLE. We were wooing and cheering each other on, and booing billionaires, and it was truly the best reminder that engaging locally matters, especially since one of our councilmembers asked us to clarify if "giga" was bigger than "mega" or not.
(And some guy complained about the train ruining the mental health of the baseball players, which is at 49:34 of this video, and it's 60 seconds of the best comedy of my life. I rewatched it multiple times today.)
Statistically, your decision makers probably do not know about the issues you care about. That's why this ACT module is a plethora of ideas, inspiration, and tangible actions you can implement, not just in your own life, but as you ✨get on your soapbox✨ and talk to others.
Also, EXCITING NEWS, Soapbox (and yours truly) was featured in my favorite newspaper, Good Good Good, on the power of radical imagination. Read here!
And if you want to hang out, join me at this Friday's free workshop with climate friends.

Your bite-sized action plan Reader
✅ ACT by picking a labor resistance intersection
Here's your menu of options today!
- Meet the women carrying the weight of fast fashion and subscribe to Atmos's newsletter. They have important coverage at the intersection of climate and culture, which often features labor, health, and other stories.
- Write to your local representative on an issue that matters to you, such as a data center moratorium, a higher minimum wage, more affordable housing and transit, extended producer responsibility, etc. It is SOOOO easy in most places to find + write to your local rep. All you have to do is Ecosia (not Google, use a different search engine) [your city/town] + "how to contact my representative." Most have email addresses readily available, and all you have to do is say your name and a sentence or two of what you care about.
- Make a plan to watch I Love Boosters this month with a friend. This is an anticapitalist comedy movie by Boots Riley. It's literally a caper whose premise centers on a sweatshop labor overlord. TIME wrote about it here. I can't wait to watch it!!
- Pick an Al resistance project that intersects with labor and give it your support. Karen Hao, author of Empire of Al, along with other collaborators, put up this hella cool site about AI resistance projects across 9 pillars. One is labor! The Al Resist List's scope is worldwide, and an excellent thing to pull out of your pocket when you're feeling overwhelmed about AI domination. Thanks to the AI Resist List, just found out about Media Capture Watch. And this memetivism toolkit.
- Join/support your local labor unions! Pick one! There are teachers unions, farmers unions, transit riders unions, freelancers unions, and more.
That's it for today. Thanks for joining me in creating a better future for all of us and thanks for being nice so I don't cry!
Bonus: join our free online workshop this Friday to use your senses for climate imagination!
