Jan 2026: community resilience

Each month, we break down our topic into four weekly modules. Catch up on previous editions here.

This week's module: ACT

Estimated reading time: 3 minutes

Here's what we'll learn today Reader

Okay, so we're basically done with the first twelfth of 2026. That's frightening. Who knew you could pack so much fàciïsmé into thirty days? (Actually, a lot of people knew lolololololol.)

Gravity feels extra heavy this month, so instead of empty platitudes and calls to action, I'll leave you with a poem.

Be good to yourselves and to others. Remember that most of us, other than billionaires, authoritarians, and their enforcers, are trying our best.

So read this poem aloud to your loved ones. Or, you know, binge the Twilight movies in honor of the saga's 20th anniversary. We contain multitudes; you could do both!

Before the poem, here are three handouts if you want to make your 2026 Better World Bingo, a Soapbox tradition that's now four years old!

Instructions, 20 actions, and 16 books reading list: Better World Bingo lesson plan.pdf

One of your bingo square actions could be to host a bingo-making party with your friends! Tag @soapboxproject on IG!

Great, now here's a meme to alleviate your time anxiety.

Your bite-sized action plan Reader

✅ REFLECT with this poem on resilience.

This month, I wanted to find us a poem that reminds us: we belong here, to this place, to each other, to ourselves. And who says it better than Maya Angelou, celebrating self-worth as an act of resistance against racial oppression?

This one's a poem you've probably seen before.

We have the choice, every day, to be the "you" in this poem--or to choose justice and liberation.

I hope you enjoy (?) the rest of your month and equip yourself, your loved ones, and your community (you don't have to like them!!) for the times ahead, whether the disasters are natural, manmade, or somewhere in between.

Here's to the rise; here's to building a new future.

Love,

Nivi

Still I Rise by Maya Angelou

You may write me down in history
With your bitter, twisted lies,
You may trod me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, I'll rise.

Does my sassiness upset you?
Why are you beset with gloom?
’Cause I walk like I've got oil wells
Pumping in my living room.

Just like moons and like suns,
With the certainty of tides,
Just like hopes springing high,
Still I'll rise.

Did you want to see me broken?
Bowed head and lowered eyes?
Shoulders falling down like teardrops,
Weakened by my soulful cries?

Does my haughtiness offend you?
Don't you take it awful hard
’Cause I laugh like I've got gold mines
Diggin’ in my own backyard.

You may shoot me with your words,
You may cut me with your eyes,
You may kill me with your hatefulness,
But still, like air, I’ll rise.

Does my sexiness upset you?
Does it come as a surprise
That I dance like I've got diamonds
At the meeting of my thighs?

Out of the huts of history’s shame
I rise
Up from a past that’s rooted in pain
I rise
I'm a black ocean, leaping and wide,
Welling and swelling I bear in the tide.

Leaving behind nights of terror and fear
I rise
Into a daybreak that’s wondrously clear
I rise
Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave,
I am the dream and the hope of the slave.
I rise
I rise
I rise.
