Here's what we'll learn today Reader
Okay so. LOTS has happened since we last talked. Remember how there was no Changeletter in December?
The reason for this is because a girl's gotta take a break.
Did I take a break?
NO!
Why?
Well, because in November, a lovely person named Kraig came up to me at a conference and asked if there was a Soapbox in Portland. And I said no... but there can be!
And he said great, because I have the perfect space for you. It's an old church converted into a gathering space for social good. Didn't you say Soapbox was basically "climate church?"
SO NOW WE HAVE LAUNCHED IN PORTLAAANDDDD!!!
Since the end of November, we (I + you):
- Raised $20k for our Portland launch, which covers ~a quarter of our operations there, thanks to grassroots donations and employer matches from our Seattle community and a big gift from Eugene, a long-time role model of mine (he co-founded Work On Climateβ
β
- Hired our Portland community lead! Sam has already saved my booty multiple times in the last 48 hours of working for Soapbox lol. She brought me a sandwich, figured out how the heck to transform our room to match the vibes, and stopped various gaps in our programming. It's going to be a phenomenal era
β
- Had a suuuuper successful launch event! A pic of the space is below (lmao I don't have any actual pics of the event yet). All this while Soapbox Seattle is THRIVING.
In a few hours, I have a call with some folks in Manhattan, and next week, I'm talking to a new friend who lives in Missoula, Montana! Our growth is only possible because of you and I know people say that all the time, but really, if you weren't donating, sharing, and sending good vibes, I would give up.
Every day, I have to choose between doing Soapbox and quitting. And if I'm being honest? Most of the time, I'm a coin flip away. It would be so easy to walk away from this and get a "real job" with a salary and β¨healthcareβ¨ but the thing I can't give up on is you.
So thank you thank you thank you for every time you forwarded Changeletter to a friend, every time you took action, every time you opened this email. I'm so glad to start 2026 together.
We might be witnessing a global polycrisis, but the real treasure is the friends we made along the way................... right?
Okay enough of me being sappy. Let's get on with our January theme: community resilience! Here are four prompts/directions for you to take into your life and share with others before our LEARN module next week.

CONNECT with these conversation prompts to reimagine community resilience
Every CONNECT module, youβll get up to four prompts to connect with yourself, others, spirit, and systems.
Your mission is to take whatβs in these Changeletters and bring it into one of those dimensions. Remember to talk about these so they don't die dead in your inbox or else they will be very sad.
- Connect with self and spirit: where does resilience come from? This can be through the lens of climate, community, or personal resilience. What's the source of resilience? Journal on this or share it with a friend.β
β
- Connect with self and systems: what is our current relationship with our natural resources and how does that need to stay the same? How does that need to change? Resilience is all about responding to changes, and we're in a time of unprecedented shifts around us. How do we stand on land? How do we relate to water? How are we thinking about our interconnectedness?
β
- Connect with self and others: what can make us better and more resilient villagers? We always say that it takes a village, but a village is only as good as its villagers. Think about what communities you are part of today and how you contribute or what you provide. What do you want to add, subtract, keep the same, or change?β
β
- When you imagine a best-case scenario 100 years from now, what does that look like? What's had to shift in order to make that happen? Something super basic we talked about at Soapbox Portland is that we currently live in a world of manmade maps, despite watersheds being the defining factor of a geography. How come many of us don't know where our water comes from? What would resilience look like if we had a baseline understanding of place?
β
Those are your four questions for today! I hope you have some fruitful discussions with humans in your life. As always, report back with anything you'd like to share.
Team earth forever,
Nivi
