October 2026: people power & democracy
Each month, we break down our topic into four weekly modules. Catch up on previous editions here.
This week's module: ACT
Estimated reading time: 3 minutes
Here's what we'll learn today Reader
Hey guess what? Soapbox is testing some more in-person stuff out in DC and the SF Bay Area!
If you live in SF, don't miss our collage soiree on Friday, November 6!
These past few days, we had our city leads (Seattle, DC, SF) come do a pretty intense three-day training and it was incredible. It was really cool doing it for democracy month, because every new Soapbox location (Soap Bubble lol) is a microcosm of the future we all deserve. Here's us! And read on for your people power actions ✨
if you want a better future, you need to invest in it
All i'm saying is these Changeletters are use it or lose it bb

Your bite-sized action plan Reader
Today, your mission is to build people power where you live.
- Talk to a friend about one improvement you can make to your voting system. In the USA, that might be ranked choice voting, which you can explore with FairVote. In a different country, that may be exploring the best ways of governance that works on a local level. How are decisions made, and what's the smallest unit of representation you can influence?
- Participate in the smallest unit of representation you can influence. This might just be a Washington State thing where I live, but I learned about a position called a Precinct Committee Officer that's basically in charge of civic engagement on a couple-block radius! A bunch of us from Soapbox are going to try to become PCOs and gain institutional power; most precincts don't even have a PCO, but it's technically an elected position!
- Participate in a protest or another form of organized resistance. Fascism and authoritarianism are menacing the world in pretty much every country. I'm from India, and it's incredible to see what's happening with the Cockroach Janta Party with youth uprising against a corrupt government. The threat to authoritarianism has always been people power, and it's past time for each of us to exercise that muscle, whether it's marching or striking or simply making that protesters in a sit-in are fed lunch.
- Delete yourself (remove your personal information from the internet). I suspect that surveillance is going to be an increasing theme as we continue to be angry at the state of the planet. I just started a subscription to DeleteMe to delete my internet footprint (you can do this yourself and there are other options). I'm also looking at things like VPNs, etc. with this guide from Liminal Works. This feels a bit like vaccination to me; we should have these sorts of things in place before we need it.
- Find one daily action you can do to reclaim and/or spread power and/or practice anarchy. I found this Reddit thread on daily anarchist actions, and someone said they "de-brand" themselves by hiding all the brands on their clothing etc., which I thought was fun.
And if you live in the United States, CALL YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY in Michigan, Florida, Texas, Pennsylvania, North Carolina and confirm with them that they've made a plan to vote. Montana also has some really cool stuff against corporate corruption!
Treat yourself by going down Abdul El-Sayed's thirst trapped social media. It's been the best use of social media for me all year.
A lil note 💚
