Here's what we'll learn today Reader
Throughout human history, we former monkeys have been experimenting with the best way to govern ourselves and each other.
I don't know if we've ever come up with a good answer, but as our global population continues to grow and our climate continues to get worse, figuring out how we organize ourselves and our resources is going to be absolutely critical to the survival of humanity and the living beings we interact with.
That's the point of today's Changeletter: opening the door to conversations around people power, what it means, and what we need to reclaim.
In my view, billionaire capitalism is menacing our ability to govern, no matter where in the world we live.
Yesterday and today was Amazon's Prime Day (again???) and I am sick and tired of these losers doing social engineering to get us to do overconsumption.
So, three things to put on your radar before we begin:
Bookshop.org does anti-Prime Day sales every time there's a Prime Day and you can get free shipping. Here's a list curated by Soapbox!โ โ
On that list is the solarpunk romcom I wrote, Brighter Than the Sun, under a pen name ๐ซฃ๐ซฃ๐ซฃ You can get it on Bookshop^ ORRRR if you live in the US, preorder it directly from a Black-owned bookstore. And then you get some very silly and fun stickers and a signed copy. Here's the link!โ โ
Today, your mission is to take one of these conversation prompts into the world.
When you think of a group you're part of (friendship, workplace, household, society), who gets to speak the most? Who gets heard the most? Is this the same person? Why are the dynamics the way they are? โ
Think of the best listener you know. What makes them a good listener? โ
Remember a time a decision was made that affected you. Again, this can be on a personal level or on a societal one. Did you understand what went into that decision? Did the mechanics of the decision-making/transparency make a difference to you? โ
If you had to run a utopian village of 150 people, how would you structure your government? What would go really well, and what would be challenging? What would change if it was 1,500 people?
That's your food for thought for democracy!
If you're in the United States, text 3 people you know and ask them what their plan is to vote. You might find that someone needs your help getting to the ballot box or understanding the rules, especially if they've never voted before!
Love,
Nivi
