May 2025: sports, pop culture, & sustainability

Each month, we break down our topic into four weekly modules. Catch up on previous editions here.

This week's module: LEARN

  • βœ… CONNECT | Conversation prompts for climate action that work for everyone
  • 🎯 LEARN | What's up with sports, sustainability, and the entertainment industry?
  • ACT | Ways to be a better fan for the earth while shifting narratives
  • REFLECT | Art, poetry, & commitments!

Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

Here's what we'll learn today Reader

Because this month's topic is sports, pop culture, and sustainability, I organized a completely unhinged activity at Soapbox Seattle last night:

Massively multiplayer thumb wrestling. My new favorite sport. Here's the video on our Instagram (give us a follow if you aren't already keeping up with our shenanigans on there)

We kicked off the topic in our CONNECT module with some questions for you to take into your life. Today, we'll LEARN with a few articles and a video.

Also, TOMORROW is our hiring deadline to come work on the Soapbox team in Seattle. Here's the link if you or a friend would be a good fit!

Your bite-sized action plan Reader

βœ… LEARN by choosing your own rabbit hole adventure (pick an article or video below)

β€œPeople said it was impossible to change China, but the evidence we are now getting says consumption of shark fin soup in China is down by 50 to 70 percent in the last two years,” Peter Knights, executive director of WildAid, told The Washington Post in 2013. And such a consumption decrease has continued in 2016. β€œIt is a myth that people in Asia don’t care about wildlife. Consumption is based on ignorance rather than malice.”
  • Rabbit hole 2: sports & circularity | read about this author's perspective on fashion, entertainment, hypocrisy, and opportunities to reduce waste.

  • Rabbit hole 3: entertainment, music, & mega-events | watch Adam Met (the "A" in the band "AJR") give a 5-minute rundown on levers for change in the music industry. You'll learn about how you can hold artists, venues, and each other accountable, because there's NO MUSIC ON A DEAD PLANET.
video preview

I also pre-ordered Adam's book, Amplified, and you can get it too at Bookshop.org or your fav retailer. (He's also raffling off two VIP tickets to AJR, so that's definitely a perk)

Next week, we'll cover some sports/pop-culture actions you can take.

See you then!

Love,

Nivi
