May 2025: sports, pop culture, & sustainability

Each month, we break down our topic into four weekly modules. Catch up on previous editions here.

This week's module: REFLECT

Estimated reading time: 3 minutes

Here's what we'll learn today Reader

On my Better World Bingo this year, the first thing I put down was take my grandma on a vacation. Today, I'll be sending Bama back home after a wonderful ten days together where I learned to cook a bunch of chutneys, a healthy type of dosa, and a typical South Indian mango daal.

As I've pestered Bama nonstop about her childhood, it's become more obvious to me than ever how important stories are for our world. The human experience is built on stories. And isn't that what all entertainment--sports, music, art, and more--are all about?

So as we wrap up our May topic today with our REFLECT module on sports, pop culture, and sustainability, let's dedicate some extra brainpower to observing these stories around us and how they change our society, for better or for worse.

In this Changeletter, you'll find some prompts on making your own art, plus a song that substitutes our usual written poem! ✨

Have fuuunn (and if you wrote to me last week asking about the FIFA action, I'll get back to you hopefully this week!)

Your bite-sized action plan Reader

✅ REFLECT on pop culture through an arts & crafts activity!

Your mission today is to make something!

Here are some ideas and options...

  • If you could design swag for a sports league comprised only of people who care about saving the planet, what would you do? (Bonus if you send me mockups and ideas just for fun so I can share them out)
  • Make a meme, either online or through physical materials like a collage. @earthlyeducation and @gogreensavegreen have some great inspiration. A particularly golden time in the pop culture meme era was the Taylor Swift Jetting Everywhere stuff.
  • Design a flyer to save something specific. Think about how a lost cat poster invokes more emotion, and maybe even action, than a "our earth is dying" poster. What is the most specific thing you want to save, especially in your geographical area? Is it an orca? Is it the paws of pets who can't handle the rising temperatures of the cement? Is it a community garden? We need better planet propaganda!
  • Create a movie poster that subverts an existing film, TV show, superhero, etc. Check out Katie Patrick's Greenzilla! (as a sidenote, she is one of the people who seems to understand the power of AI for climate imagination vs. stealing resources, which I find that very fascinating.)

Overarching reflection question: what is your role in shaping culture change?

And instead of your monthly written poem, I'd like to share We Outside, a song by Hila the Earth. Bop along to it in your living room, on your walk, with the kids, all of it! Also here's a solarpunk playlist I found.

Happy singing, dancing, running, team sports-ing, all of it!

Love,

Nivi
