October 2025: nature-based solutions
Each month, we break down our topic into four weekly modules. Catch up on previous editions here.
This week's module: REFLECT
Estimated reading time: 3 minutes
Here's what we'll learn today Reader
Happy Scorpio Szn! My birthday's coming up, and I will be a menace about it.
Enjoy your final days with pre-menace Nivi. All bets are off starting next Tuesday which kicks off NIVEMBER.
Today concludes October's topic on nature-based solutions and we'll wrap with our REFLECT module where you'll learn your ABCs.
Before we get there, I want to share a few fun off-topic updates:
- Yesterday I met someone who demonstrates the BEST case for more public transit. It involves kissing. Read it here.
- That same person also told me about a new term I'd never heard: ecocriticism. No, it's not that the Earth is canceled. It's basically literary analysis through an environmental lens... which combines all my interests?! Might heck around and get myself a degree.
- I got to be a guest on my first-ever live podcast show! It was so cool! Amanda from Clotheshorse Podcast AKA "the podcast that loves clothes but hates capitalism" aka the best sustainable podcast ever rented out a theatre in Seattle and it was A FANTASTIC night. I made a reel on my personal page with a clip about how dystopia needs to die. Very ecocritic of me, I've learned!
Pics below of the Clotheshorse live show and a thrifted shirt I got with the best iron-on message.

We can't do this without you Reader
A wee lil note: if you enjoy getting these Changeletters and you would like to make a gift of reciprocity, a $9 contribution would go such a long way. Especially if you make it monthly! 100% of this work is me sitting behind my keyboard stressing about if anyone cares about this stuff, so encouragement and financial support is so greatly appreciated!
Thank you Sarah for supporting this month!

Your bite-sized action plan Reader
✅ REFLECT by reading this alphabet aloud to yourself, teaching it to a child, or illustrating all/part of it and sending it back to me! And find ONE new word you'll use this week.
Last week we talked about now the words we're using to describe nature are disappearing, and bringing nature words back was one of our bite-sized actions.
Thank you all for playing! This was SUCHHHHHH such such a fun exercise. Huge shoutouts to everyone who participated, but especially Lydia and Jillian who submitted multiple words.
Jillian came up with like... basically the entire alphabet, and it is FANTASTIC.
It would be so cool to get this published as a children's (or slightly older children's) book.
✨ Should we do it?! ✨
If you want to contribute, pick a word and send me an illustration. No Al, please, just good vibes. I bet we can spin something up before the holidays. Maybe it's too ambitious but so is saving the world.
Before you go on your merry way of reading the nature alphabet, remember to catch up on our last three weeks of nature-based solutions content here. It'll take you under 10 mins.
Okay! Happy ABCing. Let's bring back those words. And thank you so much for donating to our HARVEST OF THE FUTURE campaign. It means a lot, and we're still tallying up corporate matches.
