Here's what we'll learn today Reader

Some say ball is life.

True as that may be, I have to break it to you: there's something that matters even more.

Water you even saying, Nivi?!?! you may ask, dribbling down the court.

Yes. Water, this mysterious substance that comprises most of our planet and most of our bodies, is literally life.

For some reason, it's been overlooked as a climate issue in the mainstream (even by us here at Soapbox, I'm so sorry), maybe because it's so distressing to think about.

Climate change can feel so abstract sometimes, even as we're living through it. Water scarcity, on the other hand, is something we can all feel so acutely. Even from sunup to sundown without water can be a challenge for people. The agony of living with water shortages isn't too hard to imagine, and we hate to think of it.

In today's CONNECT module on our July topic (water is life), we'll go over some conversation prompts that combine your knowledge of water, Dune (yes that Dune), and the equations of sacrifice.

That'll set us up for some more learning next week.

You ready?

We can't do this without you Reader

A wee lil note: if you enjoy getting these Changeletters and you would like to make a gift of reciprocity, a $9 contribution would go such a long way. Especially if you make it monthly! 100% of this work is me sitting behind my keyboard stressing about if anyone cares about this stuff, so encouragement and financial support is so greatly appreciated!

Thank you Donna for supporting this week <333 and HAPPY BIRTHDAY RUHI

Your bite-sized action plan Reader

βœ… CONNECT with these conversation prompts

Every CONNECT module, you’ll get up to four prompts to connect with yourself, others, spirit, and systems.

Your mission is to take what’s in these Changeletters and bring it into one of those dimensions.

  • Do you know where your water comes from? What would be different if everyone knew this?

  • How does imagining a world without water reframe your relationship to it? If you've read or watched Dune, you'll know that the lifestyles of the Fremen on the planet Arakis is defined by water scarcity. Fun fact: the author, Frank Herbert, was a lifelong environmentalist who was affected by a smelter polluting his local waters. We can use Dune to imagine the politics of resource extraction in our own world today.

  • How do discipline and sacrifice play into climate action and sustainability? Back to the Fremen in Dune: on this desert planet, one of the characters discovers that there are enormous pools of water around. She asks why they're suffering on this world when there's water so readily available? The other character tells her that for years, they've been conserving every single drop of water so they may someday turn their planet green again. Today, we live in an instant gratification society. What needs to change?

  • How does abundance (or perceived abundance) of resources define our culture and lifestyles?

Those are your four questions for today! I hope you have some fruitful discussions with humans in your life (ch@t GPT does not count; in fact, it is sucking up all your water). As always, report back with anything you'd like to share! I'm super behind on emails but I love hearing from you.

Team earth forever,

Nivi
