May 2025: sports, pop culture, & sustainability
Each month, we break down our topic into four weekly modules. Catch up on previous editions here.
This week's module: ACT
Estimated reading time: 3 minutes
Here's what we'll learn today Reader
Hello! I took yet another Amtrak ride up the West Coast. After the first one I did in December, I'm addicted, and this time, I brought my grandma. I had "take grandma on vacation" on my 2025 Better World Bingo board, so it's all coming along swimmingly. Here are some pics for fun, and then we'll get to our ACT module on sports, pop culture, and sustainability! Lots to scheme and dream today.
Also, I gotta go keep hanging out with her (we're eating ice cream in the sun) so no long preamble today; let's get to it!
P.S. the sweater in my mirror selfie? This woman KNITTED IT FOR ME. Also she did a hunger strike so her sisters could get an education. Also she loves public transit! I'm starting to believe nature > nurture...
Your bite-sized action plan Reader
✅ ACT by choosing one or more of the options below.
Pop culture has the power to change the world, and so do you! Here are some ideas:
- Host a watch party for Ted Lasso Season 2 Episode 3. Talk to your friends/teammates about what it all means ✨✨
- Use your next night out to start a conversation with your friends. For example, if you're going to a concert, you can drop a "did you know Billie Eilish is decarbonizing the music industry?" and see what sparks from there. Whenever we recommend this type of thing at Soapbox, people write back saying their friends are MORE climate-conscious than they'd thought!
- DM your fave. I love bopping to Taylor Swift just as much as the next person, but our pop princess catches flights like it'll cure every type of cancer. As fans of anyone/anything, it's our job to hold our teams, athletes, singers, dancers, comedians, etc. accountable, and this can be as simple as sending an encouraging message ("I love supporting artists who use their platform to preserve our only planet, so I appreciated when you did X"). Think of it like submitting public comment to a government official: they might not respond, but they will hear you, especially if you're talking to a local athlete, find their agent's contact info, or you get all your friends to write messages too!
- Refuse those silly t-shirts. If you've forked over your hard-earned money to a soccer league you play in or a 5k you're running, and you're sick of being part of the textile waste problem, email the organizer! Most of us just put our brains on autopilot when organizing things (myself included, even though I think about climate change like every waking second!!) and that means we autobuy those useuless t-shirts. You can send a note that says "Hi, my name is [NAME], and I'm really excited for [EVENT]. I love that [EVENT] is doing an amazing job of getting people outdoors to enjoy nature and stay active. Our overconsumption of clothing is one of the things that make our planet and people unsafe, so I'd like to ask [YOUR ASK which could include stopping t-shirts, charging extra, etc.] Thanks!"
- If your city is hosting a FIFA match next year, it's time to put your dreams to work. Check out the host city lineup here across Canada, USA, and Mexico. All these cities have deadlines to make huge investments in their infrastructure, and it's our job and right as residents, to make sure we get the changes we want! Connect with your local representatives and find out what your city is up to.
Happy scheming and dreaming. Next week, please report back <3
Love,
Nivi
